We may be paying less and less with cash these days, yet some traditions still remain. Because during the most recent year-end period, 38% of Belgians said that they received cash as a gift. These figures come from a survey conducted las week by Ipsos with an online panel of 1,600 Belgians.

Generous benefactors who hand out cash as end-of-year gifts: these good people are predominantly parents (63%), followed by grandparents (34%). Receiving money from an aunt or uncle (13%) closes out the top three. So, would you rather receive cash or would you prefer to be given an actual gift? Opinions are divided on this, but almost half of those surveyed said it doesn’t really matter.

It’s no secret that paying with cash is in decline. This is partly due to the fact that electronic payments were given a great boost in Belgium – especially during the pandemic. And since then, the number of cash payments seems to have stagnated. Having said that, though, with the rollout of Bancontact CASH-points, our aim is still to ensure that people have sufficient access to cash. In other words, we want to be there and make cash available to them in places where people come to make their purchases.

“Cash is a keeper, in our opinion,” says Jeroen Ghysel, CEO of the CASH-points network. “We want to continue giving cardholders from all banks easy access to their cash. By the end of 2025, we will have opened CASH-points at 950 locations in Belgium, providing users with 2500 ATMs in total.”
